Welcome...And Some Questions Answered

I’m happy you’re here. I’m even happier you’re taking the time to read a little bit more about the community. I put some questions and answers below, but if there’s anything more you’d like to know, feel free to hit me up on this site’s Contact form.

Why is the InstagramAZ website on donjay.com?

The easy answer: I’m the one who started the community back in 2011, and it’s more effective to host everything in one location. The longer answer: At one point I owned instagramaz.com and hosted the community site there. However, I was contacted by Instagram’s legal team and told to take the site down because the URL was too close to “instagram.com.” Even though I could have justified the URL under a fair use “fan site” defense, there was no way I was going to attempt to go up against Facebook’s massive legal resources — that would’ve been a losing battle. So, here we are on my site now.

Why did you start InstagramAZ?

In the early days of Instagram, I came across a community profile in San Francisco called @igerssf, and they would host meetups and post photos from community members and have impromptu happy hour get-togethers and all sorts of things. It looked really fun, but I couldn’t find one here in Arizona to join. So, I decided to create it myself. I also started a more localized group for folks in the greater Phoenix area called @igersphx.

Who runs the community?

To the best of our ability, we try to let the community run itself. However, there are a few people that put in a lot of hours to keep things running smoothly. The primary person who does a lot of the daily work is Michelle (@phxtarin). She deserves a ton of thanks for all of her hard work. She’s the unsung hero of both InstagramAZ and IGersPHX. Then there’s Danielle (@darcadi) who handles all of the contests and keeps all of that stuff on schedule. There are others who help out with planning the larger meetups, and still more who help provide feature content on occasion. It’s a team effort, and I’m very thankful to everyone who has — or who has ever — contributed in one way or another.

How did the community get so big?

I’m going to have to point right back at you for this question: you’re the reason. You and everyone else who interacts with the community helps to make it special. InstagramAZ was created to foster community between all of Arizona’s Instagram enthusiasts. So, anything you’ve done, from attending a meetup to just liking and commenting on photos, helps to make this community better. We didn’t grow the profile artificially; it grew organically because of people like you.
